With fall now officially upon us, that means it’s time to put away the swimsuits and the flip-flops and start reaching for the knitted scarves and the cozy sweaters. The weather is now starting to turn brisk and mild, the kids are back in school, there’s a bite in the air (with a hint of cinnamon and spice, of course!), and the heat that typically defines our summers is finally coming to an end.
This also means that now is the time to start enjoying some of the many enjoyable autumn activities that our area has to offer. From weaving through a corn maze to enjoying a live performance, there’s no shortage of enjoyable fall things to do right here in Cobb County. This means that the only difficult choice you’ll be facing this autumn is deciding which one you want to do first!
1. Have an Adventure at Sleepy Hollow Farm
There is nothing sleepy about a day spent at Sleepy Hollow Farm. While there, you’ll want to experience a tractor ride or get lost in the corn maze. Afterward, spend some time petting the adorable animals at the on-site farm and hit up the mercantile. Be sure to wander around the pumpkin patch, too, to find the perfect one for your Halloween jack-o-lantern or fall pie.
However, you’ll want to get your tickets early, as they sell out quickly and there’s only a limited number of spots available to guests. Sleepy Hollow Farm runs from September 23rd to November 5th, and general admission is just $13 per adult. Children under the age of two get in for free with the purchase of an adult ticket. 2. Get Spooky at Six Flags Over Georgia
When you think of fun fall activities here in Cobb County, you may not initially think of a theme park. Don’t let that fool you, though! Six Flags Over Georgia goes all out during the fall months, and their Fright Fest is the perfect way to spend your days this autumn. In addition to the usual rides at Six Flags, there’s also the haunted zoo, ample spooky shows, and even some ScareZones on-site.
Fright Fest runs from September 18th to October 31st, and you can buy your tickets online or at the gate. One-day tickets start at $39.99, though other attractions may require an add-on purchase. Season ticket holders can also enjoy the activities included, too. Make sure you arrive early, though, so you can experience everything that the Fright Fest has to offer!
3. Appreciate the Theatre at The Strand
While the performing arts are relevant all year long, it’s oh-so-much more enjoyable during the fall months, when the heat and the humidity of the summer finally start to fade away. When the weather starts to get cooler, it’s the perfect time to catch a show at The Strand in Marietta. Combining culture with comedy, this theatre has everything you need for a good time in Cobb County.
Some of their offerings for the fall lineup include The Strand Ole Opry: Revival, Smoke On the Mountain, and the iconic Seven Brides for Seven Brothers play. There are also comedy shows with an open mic, live musicians, and the Lumiere Piano Bar and Lounge. Many activities are free, but you’ll want to reserve your tickets at the box office for their shows, as they sell out quickly.
4. Sip and Draw at the Chalktoberfest
If you’re the type of person who enjoys savoring a delicious, cold brew, then you definitely don’t want to miss out on our very own Chalktoberfest. This street festival has over 120 different varieties of craft beers on tap from local and regional brewers, as well as 25 different types of wine to sip and savor while you wander around the brightly-colored sidewalks of Marietta Square.
Yes, you read that right – another fun feature of the Chalktoberfest is the artistry that it brings out in our Cobb County residents, and playful chalk drawings are part of it. Combining the love of chalk and arts, you’ll get to enjoy the “charts” here on October 8th and 9th. If you get peckish, be sure to check out any of the food vendors and savor the local fare of our very best chefs. Open to the public, this is a fantastic free fall activity to enjoy!
5. Get Outdoors For a Scenic Fall Hike
Is there truly anything more beautiful than seeing the leaves on our trees change from vibrant green to rich amber, breathtaking red, and stunning gold? We really don’t think so, which is why you definitely want to be sure to lace up your hiking boots and take to the nature trails here in Cobb County. With your choice of trails to choose from, there’s an option for all ages and fitness levels.
You’ll want to make a day of it, too, by packing a picnic and bringing the whole family. Some parks allow pets, so if your four-legged friend wants to tag along, why not invite Fido along for the adventure? Be sure to check the weather and the conditions beforehand, though, as nobody likes getting rained out. Access to the trails is free, and as long as you follow good hiking etiquette, you’ll love the stunning fall foliage!
6. Keep It Spooky With a Ghost Tour
It’s no secret that Georgia is rich with a diverse history and flavorful past, and Cobb County is no exception to this. Not only does this make our neck of the woods a wonderfully exciting place to learn more about, but it also comes with more than a tinge of the supernatural, as well. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, you don’t want to miss out on any of the ghost tours found here.
You have your pick of options to choose from, too. The Ghosts of Marietta tour includes a walking tour and even a pub crawl, and prices start at $17 for the pub crawl and $20 for the walking tour. Another option is the Acworth Ghost Tours, which has won the honor of being the Reader’s Choice in Acworth. It runs every Friday and Saturday night in October, and you can contact them directly for more information about tickets.
