The sun goes down every night in Cobb County. Some of these spots are five minutes away. Others take a little planning. All of them give you a clear line to the horizon and a reason to stay a while.

Here are my favorite sunset spots in Cobb County.

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

📍 900 Kennesaw Mountain Dr, Kennesaw, GA 30152

🕛 Get there around 7:30 PM in August. Sunset in late summer happens around 8:15 PM, so if you show up early you’ll have time to find your spot at the summit and watch the whole thing.

🎟️ $5 per vehicle if you drive in. If you walk up, it’s $5 per person ages 16 and up.

This is a hilltop overlook at 1,808 feet, the tallest peak in the metro Atlanta area. The summit gives you panoramic views of the Atlanta skyline to the southeast and Stone Mountain in the distance. When the sun sets behind you, the whole city goes gold and the mountain catches the last light. The west-facing horizon is wide open so you see the sun drop, then turn around and watch everything else light up.

Dogs are allowed on the trails if you keep them leashed. There are over 17 miles of trails if you want to stay and walk, and the paved road stays open for hikers every day. There’s no food inside the park so bring your own snacks or plan to head back down for dinner.

Morgan Falls Overlook Park

📍 200 Morgan Falls Rd, Sandy Springs, GA 30350

🕛 Come around 7:45 PM in August if you want a good seat. The sun sets over the Chattahoochee around 8:15 PM this time of year, and the porch swings and overlook spots fill up on nice evenings.

This is a riverfront park overlooking Bull Sluice Lake and the Chattahoochee River. The hillside faces west so you get direct sunset views over the water. The light hits the lake and the whole thing goes reflective and quiet. It’s one of the better spots for a straight-on water sunset in the Sandy Springs area.

There are porch swings and covered pavilions along the water so you can sit and stay as long as you want. The walking trail is a short loop through the woods, about two-thirds of a mile. Dogs are allowed in the park as long as you keep them on leash.

The Strand Rooftop

📍 117 N Park Square NE (4th Floor), Marietta, GA 30060

🕛 Head up around 7:45 PM in August. The rooftop opens for events so check ahead to make sure it’s accessible. Sunset is around 8:15 PM this time of year and you’ll want time to grab a spot along the terrace railing.

🎟️ Access depends on events and availability. Check current hours and any entry requirements before you go.

This is the only rooftop terrace in downtown Marietta. You’re four stories up looking out over the Marietta Square and Glover Park. On a clear evening you can see Kennesaw Mountain to the northwest catching the last light. The Square itself goes golden right around sunset and the whole scene feels like you’re standing above the town.

The terrace hosts live music some evenings so you can hang around if something’s scheduled. The whole building is the historic Strand Theatre so if there’s a show or event happening you can make a night of it. Downtown Marietta is right below you with restaurants and bars within a two-minute walk.

Cochran Shoals Trail – River Loop

📍 1956 Eugene Gunby Rd, Marietta, GA 30067

🕛 Get there by 7:30 PM in August. Sunset is around 8:15 PM and the trail runs along the river so you’ll want to be walking west when the sun drops. The light on the water is best during that last thirty minutes.

🎟️ $5 parking fee at the trailhead.

This is a flat gravel trail that runs along the Chattahoochee River for over two miles. The path faces west in spots so the light hits the water and the shoals go reflective. It’s a riverfront walk, not a viewpoint, so the sunset happens through the trees and across the water. You’re moving through it more than watching it from one place.

The full loop is about 3 miles so you can turn the sunset into a longer walk or run. Dogs are allowed on leash. The trail stays open dawn to dusk and it’s wide and level so you can walk it in low light without worrying about footing.

Lake Acworth

📍 4425 Beach St, Acworth, GA 30101

🕛 Arrive by 7:45 PM in August. Sunset over the lake happens around 8:15 PM and the beach and boardwalk face west. If you want a bench or a pavilion spot, come earlier because they fill up on summer evenings.

🎟️ Free for Acworth residents with a pass. Non-residents pay a parking fee (check current rates before you go). The park itself is open year-round but the beach is only open for swimming late April through Labor Day.

This is a lakefront park with a public beach and boardwalk on the north side of Lake Acworth. The beach faces west so you get a clean sunset straight across the water. The lake is only 90 acres so the view stays intimate and the light spreads across the whole surface. It’s quieter than the bigger lakes nearby and the sunset reflects back without a lot of boat traffic.

There are four pavilions, a boardwalk, and picnic areas so you can bring food and make an evening of it. The park has two playgrounds and trails that connect to nearby streets if you want to walk after dark. Dogs are allowed in the park but not on the beach, so keep them leashed in the other areas.

Pick one spot from this list and go catch a sunset this week. You already live here. You might as well use the view.
